SO many people wonder where the name Blind Dog came from... read on!
Rigger was Derrick’s massive black lab. Great looking dog with a big blocky head. He was an escape artist and took down gates and a few doors.
There was a female in heat down the street that Rigger visited on a daily basis much to the chagrin of her owner. We believe that he intentionally hit Rigger with a very big truck. The accident broke his shoulder and pelvis and detached his optical nerve. No one thought he would make it. But he persevered.
He learned that east meant something was in front of him and reverse meant he could pass through and he needed to walk backwards. He also understood port and starboard.
Many believed he wasn’t blind. But the vets assured us over and over that he was completely blind.

Rigger was the alpha dog. Though he was blind he still lead the pack on hikes and could still retrieve a tennis ball on land and in the water.
He passed a few weeks after our son Ketch was born and he will never be forgotten.
He lives on, every moment of every day, at Blind Dog.
